Household Cleaners
Many household cleaners contain toxic chemicals that can cause cancer, lung-disease, weaken the immune-system or accumulate in the brain. These same chemicals are similarly hazardous to the environment due to poor biodegradability and severe water-pollution. The following is a list of substances that are considered particularly hazardous.
- Ammonia: very harmful to eyes, skin and lungs
- Nonylphenol ethoxylate: biodegrades into highly toxic compounds, banned in Europe
- Petroleum solvents: damage mucuous membranes
- Chlorinated phenols: toxic to respiratory and circulatory systems
- Formaldehyde: carcinogenic
- Butyl cellosolve: aversely affects the nervous system, liver and kidneys
- Perchloroethylene: carcinogenic, damaging to liver, kidneys and nervous system
- hydrochloric acid: damaging to digestive tract, liver and kidneys
- trichloroethane: damaging to liver and kidneys, supresses immune-system
- Perchlorethylene: inhalation over extended period of time can damage kidney and liver, can cause cancer
- Ammonium Hydroxide: classified as highly hazardous, can cause tissue damage, accummulates in organs
- Petroleum Distillates: linked to lung and skin cancer
- Nitrobenzene: extremely toxic
- Linear alkylate sulfonate: damages liver, easily absorbed through the skin
- Petroleum Distillates: linked to lung and skin cancer
